Louis Wain (1860-1939) made a name for himself as an artist, an illustrator of childrens book and postcards.

In the early 1920’s he started showing signs of schizofrenia and was admitted to a mental hospital where he continued to paint cats, although in a slightly different manner, until his death.

First–I love your website. Thank you for it! Second–I have to say I find the story of Louis Wain terribly sad. I am assuming the cat paintings shown here are pretty much in chronological order; if so, the last few are interesting, but also really terrifying. If one considers that this was what Wain was seeing in his head, in his thoughts and maybe in his dreams, it becomes just a little heartbreaking.

I’ll have to look up some more information on Louis Wain. Thank you for the fascinating tidbit.
